Brief History of Beyond the Blue Box

The Beyond the Blue Box project was actually conceived in the summer of 1991 with the idea that such a project could be beneficial for all participants.

It would be effective for outreach-focused training opportunities and to provide one or more minimum wage positions for developmentally challenged individuals.

Both the Town of Cobourg and the County of Northumberland lend support in the form of tax rebates and special grants. A 3-year Federal Environmental Partners' grant helped the operation get started in 1992.

The Port Hope - Cobourg Association for Community Living recognized the value of such an organization in our community and acted as a sponsor through the Environmental Youth Corp. John Abbott, former Director of CACL and Barbara Jean Taylor, former Chair of CACL, were instrumental supporters. Through the EYC, one person was hired from November 1991 to February 1992 to begin looking at community response to Beyond the Blue Box and at the expected environmental impact.

A committee was sponsored jointly by P.H.C.D.A.C.L. and by the Cobourg Area Environmental Association (CAEA). There were members representing eleven different community agencies. These included the Northumberland County, Port Hope Environmental Advisory Committee, Northumberland Clarington Board of Education, and area Rotary Clubs.

Beyond the Blue Box salutes the team who developed Beyond the Blue Box: Jack Goering, Suzanne Grew-Ellis (the first Chair), Jim Manning, Minnie Pennel, Al Rempel, Bill Thompson, Marilyn and Rae Waring and Pat Weller.

Support for the vision came from many avenues, including Northumberland County assistance from John Tondeur, former Chief Engineer and Pam Russell, current Chief Engineer for Northumberland County.

As well, we'd like to recognize the first Manager of Beyond the Blue Box, Jackie Irwin.

Beyond the Blue Box opened for business in May 1992.
